Discussion: Originality

Is there really originality in blogging and actual writing? I’m leaning more towards “no” for that answer.

Two things that aid in my thinking includes:

  1. I’m pretty sure I’ve done a post on this before!
  2. I even used the same background picture for the header as I have for another post!

Every now and then, something that feels and seems original pops up, like when an author writes a groundbreaking new novel that everyone loves, that’s one of the few times where originality seems real and possible.

Otherwise, not so much.

I don’t really have an issue with this, I mean, it can get tiring after a while but that’s why I switch it up every now and then.

Plus there’s a certain amount of comfort in having similar aspects in different books.

As for blogging, well I feel more strongly about originality here in regards to it being harder. Blogging, from what I can tell, follows a lovely pattern. There are reviews, discussion posts, lists (like top 5, top 10s of something), if there’s an issue, people will write a blog post on it.

Every now and then some awesome soul thinks up a new feature or different tag that everyone loves and/or participates in but it feels like it’s been years since anything like that happened.

To go along with that, I think a lot of new bloggers will look to other bloggers for guidance and inspiration. Sometimes they’ll mimic, to an extent, what the other bloggers are doing until they find themselves in blogging, which I think makes it very hard to be original.

Overall, I think it does exist, it’s just really rare to see something new. And like I said, every now and then an author or blogger will come out with something truly freaking mind blowing, but it doesn’t happen all that often.

What are your feelings on originality? Let me know below.

  1. Yes, I think it’s difficult to be original. I do have one feature on my blog that I think fulfills a need in my community (the SF Bay Area). On Mondays, I list every local book event I can find, so people have a one stop hub to get this information. I do this because most of these events are not well attended, andI want to ensure that more people will go. The more popular these are, the more events there will be.

    Great post, as always!
